A celebration of World Book night as part of the DMU Festival of Teaching and Learning 2018

On Wednesday 25th April, 2018 Library and Learning Services staff offered DMU and the local community the opportunity to explore and engage with different worlds through a display of books from other times, other places and other worlds.

Be introduced to the varied, imaginative and diverse world of graphic novels – including a fully unfolded Great War by Joe Sacco depicting the first day of the battle of the Somme, where 10 000 soldiers were killed and 40 000 were injured on the first day alone.

Andrew and other attendees were able to share their memories of relatives who fought in the First World War.

A display of historical children’s books from the DMU Archives enabled those attending to step back in time and enter the world of nineteenth century fairy tales. In comparison one child attending the event recommended Maisy Mouse books as her personal favourite.

Attending the event were a mixture of DMU staff, students and general public. Feedback received was overwhelmingly positive with people commenting on the opportunity to engage with books from a range of genre, picking up new stuff to read:

Love to read, so jumped at chance to see what books/genres on offer! Have picked up a few titles I’d like to read. I’d like to read/explore other books/genres I wouldn’t normally read

Wish I’d had longer to look at the displays which were excellent. Really good to engage with others about books and reading

Enjoyed looking at the different groups of books and have found something new to read.

All in all an enjoyable and engaging event.
