Kimberlin Library Syndicate Rooms – SMART Refurbishment

Kimberlin Library Syndicate Rooms – SMART Refurbishment

Kimberlin Library’s eight bookable syndicate rooms are undergoing a make-over this summer and will be unavailable from Monday 10th June for up to 5 weeks while they are refurbished by Estates and ITMS.

They’ll be returning in mid July with all-new AV, including Mersive Solstice collaborative software and Smart Surface walls. You’ll be able to share your own device content to screen and make use of full-wall writable surfaces to develop your work using the whole room as your canvas. This video from Mersive gives you a taste of the collaboration you’ll be able to achieve within our syndicate rooms after their upgrade.

The Law Library’s two bookable syndicate rooms will remain available throughout the period of work and group working spaces are available in other areas of Kimberlin Library.

Tech’ top tips – #34. Loan a laptop and other Library support

This tip is provided by the Centre for Enhancing Learning through Technology (CELT).

Don’t forget – you can still loan a laptop from the Kimberlin Library for up to 3 hours. Ask at the front desk for details if you need to borrow a laptop.

There are also PC’s around the quiet study and more general zones of the library along with the PC’s that are stationed around the various campus buildings.

Making #SpaceForSuccess – Kimberlin Study Spaces Project

Making #SpaceForSuccess – Kimberlin Study Spaces Project

This summer the Library is making more space for you to study – more space for you to succeed – and carrying out exciting, transformative improvement works in readiness for the 2018/19 academic year.

Under the project banner of #SpaceForSuccess, we’re doing this to create extra room for you to study, to increase the number of 24/7 study spaces available in Kimberlin Library and to give you some new and inspiring spaces to work.

During the summer months of 2018 we are:

  • Replacing furniture and increasing the capacity of the First Floor study area on the original side of the building. We’re introducing a range of study booths for group and individual working alongside PCs and better access to power sockets

  • We’re creating additional teaching and study space in the Ground Floor Learning Development Zone. We’ve moved staff from ground floor offices to give more space for us to support you with drop-ins, 1:1s, training and workshops. More space for study too when not in use for teaching and support.

  • We’re creating internal access from Kimberlin Library to The Collaboratory via the Ground Floor.

  • We’re clearing away staff offices from the Second Floor of Kimberlin to create a new, enlarged study floor with vibrant new furniture and twice the capacity of the old space. This space (provisionally titled The Deck) will feature a mixture of PCs, study booths, bench seating and worktables for collaboration. Maths support will be relocating to the enlarged Learning Development Zone spaces and Collaboratory on the Ground Floor

  • We’re creating MORE SILENT STUDY SPACES! We’re relocating some of our ‘back room’ operations away from the Lower Ground Floor to create an additional Silent Study room which will more than double the number of ‘talk free’ study spaces in Kimberlin Library. Desktop task lighting and power outlets will feature throughout.

  • We’re relocating our Silent IT provision to the other side of the Second Floor

  • ITMS will be re-positioning PCs to give you more space to work, e.g. for Wacom workstations

For Autumn 2018 we will be introducing:

  • A space for commuting students in Eric Wood Learning Zone with lockers and soft seating

  • A ‘makerspace‘ on the First Floor of Kimberlin Library

  • A ‘coaching corner‘ in the Learning Zone where we’ll be offering short skills sessions and drop-ins

  • Further improvements to the Ground Floor Learning Zone and other areas – watch this space!

Follow the #SpaceForSuccess hashtag here and on our Twitter and Instagram feeds @LibraryDMU for updates on the project as these elements progress and let us know what you think.

Some areas of the library will be inaccessible while refurbishment work is carried out – see local signage for details as work progresses. Plenty of study space will be available throughout the summer months for study and revision on a 24/7 basis, including syndicate rooms, all areas of the Lower Ground Floor, Ground Floor Learning Zone, First Floor IT and Silent Study. The Law Library is available throughout the summer months.
