Kimberlin Library Syndicate Rooms – SMART Refurbishment

Kimberlin Library Syndicate Rooms – SMART Refurbishment

Kimberlin Library’s eight bookable syndicate rooms are undergoing a make-over this summer and will be unavailable from Monday 10th June for up to 5 weeks while they are refurbished by Estates and ITMS.

They’ll be returning in mid July with all-new AV, including Mersive Solstice collaborative software and Smart Surface walls. You’ll be able to share your own device content to screen and make use of full-wall writable surfaces to develop your work using the whole room as your canvas. This video from Mersive gives you a taste of the collaboration you’ll be able to achieve within our syndicate rooms after their upgrade.

The Law Library’s two bookable syndicate rooms will remain available throughout the period of work and group working spaces are available in other areas of Kimberlin Library.

Finding the PC (or Mac) you’re looking for

Across our four locations, in partnership with ITMS the Library provides over 800 PCs, Macs and laptops to support your learning. We’ve been working on a project with ITMS to give you a better view of the location and the current availability of machines. You can now see a display screen at the entrance to Kimberlin Library, Eric Wood Learning Zone and The Greenhouse giving live availability information.

The screen shows the location, type of machine (standard PC, Dual Boot. AutoCAD, Mac or Assistive), the number of free machines and the total machines in that area. The columns on the right show the number of “free” machines by type in that space. If availability is becoming short, the text will turn red

PC availability is currently only available via these fixed screens, but an online link and display of this information via myDMU is on our wishlist with ITMS.

Here’s where you’ll find our “special” PCs and Macs:

The Hot Tap is Back – for now

The Hot Tap is Back – for now

Following recent service interruption, Estates have managed to breathe temporary life back into the Kimberlin Library Hot Tap. Plans are being drawn up for a completely new way of delivering boiling water. This work will be implemented at a time that will minimise the disruption to term time operation of the Library Cafe space.

We know how popular this service is and we remain committed to providing Kimberlin users with a safe means of accessing instant boiling water.

360 view and map tour of Kimberlin experiments

Some “work in progress”. We’re experimenting with 360 degree photography and ultimately hope to provide 360 virtual tours of LLS spaces. Here are a few of our initial experiments which you’ll find on our Google listing, Google Maps and in some cases Google Streetview. Let us know what you think and what maps or tours we ought to feature?

Study smart with Library and Learning Services

Study smart with Library and Learning Services

With revision underway and final assessments approaching, DMU Library and Learning Services (LLS) want to help you study smart and stay healthy during this critical time of the academic year.

library main

Look out for the Library Night Trolley from 8pm until late Sunday to Thursday, dispensing FREE hot and cold drinks and fruit to help you refuel while studying at night during the exam period. The friendly Night Trolley staff can take time out to chat to you and offer guidance and support on healthy study.

From 1 to 5 April, LLS is running a series of free workshops on exam and assignment success covering subjects such as using evidence, referencing, critical writing and much more. You can find out more and book here.

Thanks to your feedback, they’ve also been working to make the Library an even better space to use:

  • The Law Library and Eric Wood Learning Zone will be open 24/7 until the end of term. Following the Easter break they will be open 24/7 again until the end of the exam period

  • Laptops are now able to be loaned for three hours rather than two

  • 20 additional PCs have been added to the Eric Wood Learning Zone

  • More whiteboards have been bought for Kimberlin Library

  • 110 more silent study spaces on the Lower Ground and Second Floor of Kimberlin Library

Society Digimap

DMU Library has set up trial access to a new online collection via its subscription to EDINA’s Digimap service. The new collection is called Society Digimap.

Society Digimap allows you to explore a range of demographic data, providing a wealth of census and socio-economic information for Great Britain. The processing required to visualise census and other demographic datasets can be a barrier to use for many people interested in the value of the datasets. By providing these datasets as layers to visualise along with high quality Ordnance Survey (OS) data, the rich information can offer valuable insights without the need to learn how to use a GIS.

Today, the mapping facility, Society Roam is available. A full data download application is under development, which will offer the ability to download both the census data and the corresponding boundaries together.

Access to Society Digimap is available until 31st July 2019.

Trial access to Society Digimap is available until 31st July 2019.

Society Digimap can be accessed via the following access URL https://edina.ac.uk/Login/digimap?idp=https://login.library.dmu.ac.uk/oala/metadata. You will be asked to verify access using your DMU Single Sign On account and then accept terms and conditions on the Digimap platform.

DMU Library provides subscription access to the following Digimap collections: Ordnance Survey (OS), Aerial and Lidar.

DMU Library provides trial access to the Global and Society Digimap collections. Coverage to these two collections will end on 31st July 2019.
